- Establish Zero side slip
|
Engine Failure Before Vr
- Maintain centreline during take-off roll
- Engine failure during take-off roll (simulated or actual) will result in loss of directional control and inability to maintain centreline
- Once engine failure recognized cut both throttles to idle
- Apply rudders to bring aircraft back to centreline and stop
- Actual engine failure – follow checklist
- Simulated engine failure – if runway length is available, throttle up to 35 MP and continue take-off
- Simulated engine failure – insufficient runway length remaining, taxi back for take-off
|
Engine Failure after Take-off
- Fly the plane – Maintain Directional Control
- Pitch to Blue line 105

- Select dead Prop and feather
- Select dead Mixture and idle
- Establish Zero side slip
- Continue climb to safe altitude
- Keep all turns on the operating engine side as far as possible while maneuvering
|
Single Engine Landing
- Upon reaching traffic pattern altitude (if aircraft performance allows) reduce the power to maintain altitude
- Maintain an airspeed above Vyse (blue line) during level flight if possible
- Abeam the numbers, Below 150 Gear down – Verify 3 greens
- On Base, Below 125 flaps – Stage one
- Final , Flaps – Stage 2 – Verify 3 greens
- Approach speed 90
- Flaps – Stage 3 can be used on final if necessary and doesn’t affect performance drastically
|
Short Field Take-off
- Ask Controller for” Take off with a short delay” before proceeding on to the runway
- Check Rwy Centre Line / Compass / HI
- Brakes 21 RPM – Gauges Green
- Power to 35 MP and then release brakes
- Airspeed Alive? – Call out
- Maintain Centre line
- Vr 80 and climb at 90 for the first 100 feet
- After climbing 100 feet, gear up and pitch for Vyse (blue line)This is a short field simulation, not the actual short field mentioned in the POH. The actual short field that is mentioned in the POH requires Vr at 70 kts which is below red line. Therefore, we only do a short field simulation for safety.
|
Short Field Landing
- GUMPS (Full Props – MP required to reduce speed to gear down below 150)
- Downwind / Glide Slope / FAF – Below 150 Gear Down – Verify 3 greens
- Abeam the numbers / after FAF reduce to 125, Flaps – Stage 1
- Reduce speed to blue line (on base / prior to short final) Flaps – Stage 2
- Short Final 90 (add 5 – 10 in gusting conditions), Flaps full
- Verify 3 greens, gear down call
- 14 MP during landing
- Aim for about 300 feet (2 centrelines away) from the 1000-foot markers.
- On touched down throttle idle and apply the brakes progressively to a full stop (DO NOT slam and lock up the brakes)

- Fly the plane and intercept the localizer
- Once localizer is established, Identify, Verify and simulate engine shut down (simulation only)
- Adjust power on the working engine to hold Glide Slope
- Keep the needles dead centre
- Beware of straight in or circling minimums
- Expect thee airplane to be on a 5 degree bank towards the working engine while trying to hold the heading
- Upon reaching minimums proceed towards the” Single engine landing” procedure.
